Deciding what will be
done with the cremated remains may help you decide what type of urn to select.
- EARTH BURIAL
- If the final disposition of cremated remains is to take place on cemetery grounds, they
may require that a non-biodegradable urn or urn vault is used. Please check with cemetery
regarding their regulations.
-
- COLUMBARIUM -
Columbariums are designed to hold many sets of ashes in niches usually in rows and columns
which allow the front of the niche to be engraved or a bronze nameplate to be added with
the name and dates of birth and death. Columbariums are located in cemeteries, churches,
chapels, and many other places. Most niches have limitations on the size of the urn it
will accommodate. Please check with the owners of the columbarium regarding the dimensions
of the niche before you purchase an urn.
-
- MAUSOLEUM - Most mausoleums offer areas for cremated remains to be
displayed behind glass. They provide indoor areas where family members can visit the urn
of a loved one in a serene setting. There are usually restrictions on the size of urn it
will accommodate. Please check with the mausoleum owners before you purchase an urn.
-
- DISPLAY
- An
urn can be purchased for display in a residence or other location. Many people feel
that an urn can offer comfort in knowing that the cremated remains of their loved one are
present in their home. An urn can also provide an important focal point if the cremated
remains have been scattered.
-
- SCATTERING -
Cremated remains may be scattered over land or water, in accordance with local law (Check
with your funeral director). When families choose total scattering, all of the cremated
remains are scattered. When partial, or ceremonial, scattering is chosen, a small amount
of the remains are scattered while the remaining portion is buried, placed in a niche, or
kept in the home. If partial scattering, a portion of the cremated remains may be
preserved in one or more keepsake urns.
